Aesthetics more quickly crystalize into identity, and with those identities comes a sense of ownership.Īnd at the centre of all of this is Boyfriend Dungeon. I am, however, suggesting that it has allowed for subcultures to become increasingly prevalent and insular. I’m not trying to suggest that Tumblr invented subcultures. I cannot tell you the number of early-20s gay women on Tinder who have the word cottagecore somewhere in their bio. Once you build a community, people start tying their identities to and associating values with said community. Are you that kind of lesbian? Dark academia. Do you like ghosts and cemeteries? Ghostcore. Do you like cute nature shit? Cottagecore. However, the community-forming effect of tags also extends to aesthetics. For fandoms built around shared interests like an anime or video game series, this makes sense. Interact with the same users in the same tag enough times, and a community forms. Tags let you tailor your feed so that you’re only seeing posts from people in that tag. This is best exemplified by what Tumblr is known for: fandom. Tumblr’s tagging system has a similar flattening effect, but as a social media website, it has an additional function: facilitating community. This flattening effect is how depiction becomes - for some - synonymous with endorsement. There’s a tag for “Student/Teacher” but there isn’t a tag for “Student/Teacher That Acts As An Interrogation Of The Complexities And Abuses Inherent To A Relationship Compromised By Power.” If you’ve spent 10 years on AO3, that tagging system is absolutely going to shape how you understand art, whether you know it or not. However, this categorization also encourages flattening. If I’m on AO3 looking for a fic where Master Chief goes to a coffee shop with the Arbiter, I can find it by exclusively searching fics under those two tags. This system allows your audience to very specifically tailor their experience to their own desires. Does it include particular relationship dynamics? Tag it. Does it take place in a particular setting? Tag it. Does a piece of fanfic include two specific characters? Tag them. What’s different about the tagging system is the ease, speed, and volume of categorization which can occur. People like art, people look for more art that resembles what they like, those resemblances become categorised in genres. There are three points of overlap between these two sites: fandom-related content, extreme audience overlap, and, I would argue most importantly, the tagging system. And for that, I would argue we’ll have to look at the structure of Tumblr and ArchiveOfOurOwn(AO3), the two biggest fandom-related websites on the internet. I am, however, interested in how the idea of an anti transformed between the early-2000s and the mid-2010s. You can read those pieces, and they’re good. I am not that interested in the individual arguments here. The most dedicated antis say that anti-antis are pro-pedophilia, the most dedicated anti-antis say that antis are puritans and borderline fascist. To be an anti, then, is to actively campaign against art that includes such problematic material, which is how we get anti-antis - called such because they aren’t for people making art about, but they believe that said art shouldn’t be policed. Regardless of framing, tone, or content, the dynamic itself is fundamentally poisoned and encourages people to mirror it in real life. To be clear, this isn’t just about finding these dynamics distasteful it is actively believing they should not exist or be depicted in media. However, in 2016, the term changed to mean someone who was against the depiction of relationship dynamics deemed morally compromising, student/teacher relationships for example. If I don’t want The Arbiter to oh-so-tenderly smooch Master Chief, then I would be a Master Chief/Arbiter anti. “Anti,” in fandom hell, originally referred to people who did not like a specific relationship pairing. Strap in folks: It is time to address anti-shippers and - I hate this - anti-anti-shippers. To answer that question, I will have to regale you with a short history of terrible discourse. And for all of this, many people have been left wondering how the fuck we got here. Middling review scores from some publications, adoration from a large subset of the game’s audience, intense backlash (including harassment and vague threats of violence) from a smaller part of said audience, and the backlash to the backlash throughout the corner of the industry I happen to reside in. The response to Boyfriend Dungeon has been…scattershot to say the least. This piece is, instead, about everything hanging in the air around him. He is terrible, well-depicted, and this piece is not about him. There is a shithead at the heart of Boyfriend Dungeon.

In theory, your kids’ data could follow them to Instagram, WhatsApp, and other Facebook products throughout their entire lives. Exactly what happens to that data and how secure it is is anyone’s guess, as Facebook shares data across its different platforms and says it uses all data, including kids’, to improve its products. Facebook’s privacy policy states that it collects and stores the content of the messages sent by kids and also monitors their app usage (like whom they contact most). Though there are no ads or purchases, Facebook may send kids surveys to respond to. Is my kids’ data safe on Messenger Kids? Is mine? But with careful parental setup and oversight - and limited amounts of time spent using it - it can be a fun way for younger kids to connect with family and friends. Though Facebook designed the app for kids age 6–12, based on privacy best practices and overall recommendations for social media use, we’ve rated Facebook Messenger Kids for age 13+ for independent use. Kids can say or show anything they want to (and you won’t be able to review it), unless you’re around to keep an eye on things. One thing you have no control over or insight into is video chats. The Facebook app offers a few more controls in the Dashboard, such as the ability to turn your kid’s online status on and off, than the desktop version. You can also enable Sleep mode, which prevents kids from using the app during set times. How do I set parental controls on Messenger Kids?įacebook gives you a Parent Dashboard in your Facebook account (click or tap the Messenger icon and then your kid’s name), where you can view almost everything you want to see (kids can’t delete anything they do, so you have access to all of it), including a list of recent contacts, recent images and videos shared in chats, a chat history, and a list of reported and blocked contacts. They can also create group chats (which you don’t need to approve) and make video calls. They can add filters, similar to Snapchat, and spend lots of time decorating photos and videos, playing with filters, and drawing things to send to friends. Once they have contacts, kids can send text, photos, videos, audio files, and GIFs. Kids can use the app either on their own device or on yours, but remember: If kids use Messenger Kids on your phone, they’ll have access to all the photos and videos on your device. To create your kid’s profile, you add their name (it can be a nickname), provide an image (which can be anything), and choose whether to add their gender and birth date. Supervised Friending also allows for more visibility within the app to help kids find friends more easily. Once you download the Messenger Kids app and log in, you can add contacts for your kid through your own account or opt into the Supervised Friending feature, which lets kids choose their own contacts (you still get notified of new contacts your kid adds). Parents must have their own Facebook account to set up Messenger Kids. Unlike grown-up Messenger, Kids doesn’t have stories (picture collages uploaded by friends), but it does offer many more photo filters (unicorns, aliens, stinky fish), and it has a few games. It works a lot like regular Facebook Messenger, but parents are the gatekeepers: You manage all the settings (such as notifications) through the Messenger Kids module in your Facebook account. Messenger Kids is a free messaging app created by Facebook aimed at kids under 13. Learn more about the pros and cons of Messenger Kids to determine whether it’s right for your kid. While Messenger Kids can be used safely (parents can see everything kids do, control their settings, and even remotely shut down the app), Facebook does collect user data, and the company clearly has a big stake in training young users for grown-up social media. What they really want is Instagram and Snapchat so they can act just like the big kids. Facebook’s Messenger Kids is social media for kids who’ve outgrown toy smartphones but aren’t quite ready for the real thing. For people who have the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition, IViewer is available for viewing images. Note that in the Casio community, people in general had agreed to not tamper with the FX-cg10 built-in image support restrictions to avoid having to deal with the same thing Ndless is going through (which TI is blocking to prevent cheating), so any image viewing program that got released for the PRIZM will not let you open g3p/g3b files. Despite the speed gain over ImageViewer, this version of mViewer GX is slower than its HP/TI counterparts, since the calculator doesn't have much RAM for ASM/C programmers (about 128K) and has a slower processor (max overclock speed is 94.3 MHz via OverClui), but it is still pretty impressive and the program was tweaked to make it intuitive regardless of the calculator limitations. Although there was also ImageViewer being available before, mViewer GX takes things some steps further by adding support beyond just non-progressive JPEG and making image viewing much faster. Basically, you convert a document using the online converter linked above, then it generates the HP PPL code for you, along with the image data, so you can visualize your image easily.Īs for the Casio PRIZM version, it is written in native code and was released shortly after the HP Prime version. The touch screen makes it very easy to use on the user side and the program, as expected, is very fast. You can access mViewer GX at (requires TI-Planet account) And that's not all! There are now HP Prime and Casio PRIZM versions too! The HP Prime version, thanks to the extremely powerful HP PPL language and the 400 MHz processor, was easier to pull off in terms of required on-calc code, because the BASIC-like language supports images of any size (although programs that are over 2 MB large will render the calculator unstable) and even stretching, as we can often see in HP games nowadays. Although it will work in any OS that supports Lua, this new document viewer takes advantage of the considerable Lua image speed improvements since OS 3.2, and no, don't be scared: Despite being Lua, the scrolling speed will be much more than the 5 frames per second we often saw in advanced Lua programs. mViewer GX works differently, however, in the way that it is basically an online converter, located on TI-Planet, that will generate files that you can then view on your calculator. Well, here are some good news: A few weeks ago, a Lua version of mViewer, called mViewer GX, has been released! Not only does it support images of various format, but also PDFs. However, since then, Texas Instruments have since started to block Ndless instead of fixing OS bugs, meaning that fewer and fewer people can use mViewer, nPDF and the other Ndless programs. A few years later, Legimet started working on nPDF, a PDF reader for the TI-Nspire. It was later ported to color calculator models as mViewer CX and added support for various image formats, allowing people to store more images on their calculators. A few years ago, Critor from TI-Planet released mViewer, a TI-Nspire image viewer that ran via Ndless.
